Online vs. Offline Businesses

June 8, 2008

After ‘interning’ at my dad’s shop for the past week, I really can see the differences between running an online business and an offline one. And all the more I can convinced that it is really important for offline businesses to explore the opportunities that are available online for them to expand their businesses and to take them to the next level.

Firstly with a offline business, I have to:

1. pay the rent

2. be/hire someone to physically be there to man my business

3. be subjected to environmental influences on my business because of conditions such as weather, season and time

4. make sure that I take lots of efforts to gain customers/drive traffic to my shop

5. manage the business by manually taking care of things

However, by bringing my business online, I can subject my business to a lot more opportunities that may not be available to me offline such as:

1. 24/7 operation of my shop online – with a website that is fully furnished with all my products, information and check out system, I can enable my shop to operate 24/7

2. advertising to millions of people through different means – i can explore ways to advertise my business to people of different countries and some ways include, visiting websites/forums that are related to my business and contributing my knowledge and ideas there to gain awareness for both what I do and my business

3. automate all proceedings from purchasing to after sales service

4. stand to earn extra revenue from advertisements on the website

5. reduce the costs of rental etc. to only the costs of webhosting and a domain name and perhaps a script to set up the shopping cart etc.

and frankly, the list goes on…

Online businesses are actually providing conveniences to the internet user community by bringing them their shopping experiences from the malls to the comfort of their homes! Now, people can literally shop in their knickers if they want! It’s amazing at how the shopping experience can be digitised to fit into the computer and the internet and bringing people the joy of not having to rush for that fitting room or to queue those long queues that seem to never end. It also saves people the time and energy of having to travel out of their homes to get down to the busy shopping mall.

It’s good to consider how your offline business can be translated onto online medium! 😀 Well, think about it if you are an offline business owner and I hope I have enlightened you in some ways! Do drop me an email if you have any questions you would like to ask me personally! 😀

My Most Motivated Day Since the End of Exams

May 17, 2008

Today marks the most motivated day that I had ever since I completed my exams on the 5th of May. My fun-loving self decided to start the day right instead of the usual slacking and playful mode.

Want to know how much I enjoyed myself since 5th May?

Here goes…

5th May PM: After the exams, I went to Holland Village for a good sumptuous meal of pizza and baked rice from N.Y.D.C. and a couple of drinks at the nearby Breko (oh gosh.. u should check out their 2 for $12 deal! lol!)

6th May: Slept till early afternoon before I went over to Calvin’s place where we carried out our movie marathon and watched movies such as Along Came Polly. We ordered take out too because we were too lazy to go to the nearby food centre to pack lunch!

7th May: We both woke up really early to go fetch Jonathan from the airport! We had the BK breakfast and broke Jonathan to his hotel to check in. Then we went to Chinatown and went for the YUM CHA buffet!! lol! We really ate till we were stuffed and hung out in Chinatown which Jon said, “Man.. it looks just like in the movies!” 😛

oh no.. I can’t remember the in-betweens!!

10th May: My cousin’s wedding! I was there for the tea ceremony, photo shoot and even hosted the wedding dinner!! Gosh!! It was a mighty tiring day and I indulged in my Starbucks Cafe Latte and the Almond Butter cake… woooo.. it was heavenly especially when I was suffering from the lack of sleep!

11th May: It was a powerful service held in the indoor stadium and I was really revitalized with God’s love. I’ve not had such a powerful annointing since a long time.. But it certainly caused me to go on a powerful embark on ‘after-school’ life! We went to Bugis for our lunch at Swenson’s and indulged in the new Hazelnut Ice Cream Sundae they had… it was heavenly!! Sim Lim Square was our next stop and Jonathan really indulged in buying a lot (i mean a lot) of gadgets! Haha.. As for Calvin and I, we finally bought our first digicam together.. My old digicam’s cost was shared between the 2 men in my life – my dad and calvin.. (my dad’s extra!!) lol! this time, it’s just the two of us….

and, I watched the EPL finals with my dearest Xiaowen! It was Man Utd’s night ok! And I was there to witness it!! Hahaa.. It felt sooo good to see Ryan Giggs lifting up the trophy LIVE!!

12th May: SENTOSA (an offshore island)!! Need I say more? Hahaha..

13th May: I can’t remember again!! But it was Jonathan’s last day in Singapore… oh!! We went to Orchard to do final shopping…

14th May: It was boohoohoo bon voyage to Jonathan and Calvin and I just fell asleep and we slept till it was dinner time!! Hahaa.. then we went to.. mmm.. was it Crystal Jade? (I think so..) for dinner!! Yummmmmy…!

15th and 16th May: I was just slacking while my dear Calvin was busy doing his work… hahaha.. I was just stoning into the computer!!

NOW, I’m finally on the go!

I started this day really cool by planning exactly what I wanted to accomplish right at the beginning of the day. I decided not to be tooo ambitious and I concentrated on the top 5 most important things to do.
1. Blog an entry (which I did earlier!)
2. Set assignments for 5 individual freelancers

3. Finish up my work on our latest project
4. Clear clothes off the sofa bed (which is a pile by the way)

5. Clear my room (it was in an utter mess but not now!)

Well, it might not seem like a lot that i accomplished but I can be sure that if i hadn’t set those goals at the beginning of the day, I bet today would have just gone wasted! It just goes to show how important it is to set goals not only on a long term basis but also a short term one such that we are constantly challenged everyday to accomplish a little that adds up to go a long way.

So start making it a habit to set daily goals to make sure that your energies will be focused and targeted towards achieving the outcomes you desire!

mmm.. which gives me that idea to start blogging at the beginning of the day to share with you my daily goals and to review at the end of the day, whether I have achieve them.. wow.. sounds like a cool feat.. let’s see if I do accomplish that ya!!! haha.. 😀 do cheer me on!!

The IM Buzz Creators finally meet up..

May 13, 2008

If you all know of the IM Buzz Creators, you would know that they are one of the hottest internet marketing duo and know that one half resides in sunny Singapore while the other is in Mauritius. I’m really proud to say that i know both of them and one of them is in fact my pride and joy – my boyfriend and business partner, Calvin! 😀

So anyway, the both of them just got to know each other by chance and have been communicating through emails and MSN ever since. I’ve always been amazed at how ideas can be communicated so clearly and that trust that the both of them have between each other. If you know of their track record, the products that they have launched and the marketing portfolio that they have build up for themselves, you will be surprised that all this took place through the internet and without face to face communication.

It just goes to show how powerful the internet is in bridging connections from people of different parts of the world and thankfully, it was the medium that brought two people together and brought about the creation of the IM Buzz Creators.

This week was a monumental week for Calvin and I as well as for Jonathan because it’s the first time we have met and it’s through all their great marketing efforts that allowed Jon’s trip down to Singapore to be fully paid and in style! The meeting was really magical for me because I was witnessing two great friends meeting for the first time in their lives and I must say that Jon was really brave to take the plane down to Singapore with no idea who he was meeting, where he was going to stay for 1 week in Singapore and how he was going to get around town. He basically just trusted Calvin and of course, God to make sure that everything will be alright. And certainly, everything couldn’t have been better.

I’ll be uploading some of the pictures that we have taken along with Jonathan in the next few days to share with you the images of the great time we had! 😀

An Online Business Is TOO Risky!

March 14, 2008

Before you start judging my statement and think that I do not practise what I preach about starting an online business, let me clarify my title. That’s actually my parents’ initial response when I started internet marketing online with Calvin. They think that an online business is too risky.

Then the thought arises – what exactly is so risky about starting an online business?

1. There’s really not a huge capital being used. What I need basically are a domain name (SGD15/yr) and a subscription to hosting services (SGD 15/month).

2. I do not have an inventory of physical goods and services (that is if I am promoting and selling e-products)

3. I have 24/7 control of my business so long as I am connected to the internet.

4. I have millions of customers that are waiting from every single corner of the world for the opportunity to come by my website.

5. I can have flexible working hours.

I have been helping my dad at his shop (he owns an offline business) these past few days because he is currently short handed. I enjoy going to his shop because it is the place where I spent a lot of my childhood days at. His shop is a toy shop. Don’t think in terms of Toys R Us or Kiddy Palace kind of toy shop. His is a regular and cosy little toy shop that has existed for 2 decades (since the later 1980s).

His offline business is not doing too good because of the increasing commercial competition that exists almost everywhere. Cheaper goods can be obtained from countries like Thailand and China, and it’s really a matter of who has the product with the best price and located where consumers are. My dad’s shop sadly, isn’t at a very good location – far from the crowds and far from where all consumers are.

He opens his shop everyday except sundays at 11.30 am and closes by around 8pm. It’s a tough cycle that he repeats everyday without fail – rain or shine. The expenses of running the shop basically include electricity and water bills, the payment for the goods, shop space rental and I believe that it adds up to about SGD 2,000.

Now comparing his offline business and my online business, do you notice the stark contrast? In terms of the no. of consumers, the capital/costs per month and the need for a shop space to store the goods. For my online business, my shop is my website and my consumers are my web visitors. Given that the offline business is situated in Singapore away from the global consumers, the idea of location (whether offline or online) can heavily affect the opportunities for people to buy something from me.

Now, it’s something that I hope you, my blog reader will continue pondering over if you’re still thinking whether you should start up an online business or even just a blog for a start. There’s really not much to lose in starting an online business and the idea that it is too risky is certainly not supported. If you’re looking for ideas to start, you might want to check this out!

January 29, 2008

The past 3 days have been crazy for both Calvin and Jonathan because of the launch of the brand new S-Buzz Marketing as well as the much anticipated IM Buzz Software Membership Site.
